Gemological Science International (GSI) Celebrates
20 Years of Innovation and Industry Impact

Gemological Science International (GSI), one of the world’s largest gemological organizations, proudly marks its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of pioneering work that continues to shape the future of the gem and jewelry industry.

Founded in 2005 as a new kind of gemological laboratory, GSI was created to meet the evolving needs of both manufacturers and retailers, combining deep scientific expertise with real-world commercial insight. Today, GSI has grown into a full-spectrum gemological organization with a global footprint and a reputation for innovation, speed, and integrity.

“We set out to build something different — not just a lab, but a forward-thinking organization that could evolve with the industry,” said Debbie Azar, President and Co-Founder of GSI. “Twenty years later, we’re proud to be leading in areas that matter most: colored gemstones, advanced screening, and education.”

While many in the industry have focused primarily on diamonds, GSI has long recognized the importance — and challenges — of the colored gemstone market. Today, the organization is investing heavily in creating reliable, consistent standards for grading and identifying colored gemstones, a historically underserved category. “Colored gemstones are incredibly complex, but they’re also the future,” said Azar. “Our work brings clarity and confidence to a segment that has long needed it.”

With the rise of lab-grown diamonds and composite materials, GSI has developed some of the most advanced screening and detection processes in the world. Its global laboratories now screen millions of jewelry articles annually, ensuring accuracy and protecting the integrity of the supply chain.

GSI is also shaping the future of the industry through education, offering a wide range of online and in-class programs to tens of thousands of students worldwide. These programs cover everything from gemstone identification and retail-focused training to diamond grading. “Education is central to our mission,” said Azar. “We’re not just certifying stones — we’re building knowledge, credibility, and careers.”

Throughout its 20-year journey, GSI has worked in close partnership with retailers and manufacturers around the world. Its commitment to transparency, accuracy, and speed has helped clients meet today’s challenges, from tight delivery windows to evolving product assortments with confidence.

As GSI enters its third decade, it continues to push boundaries through collaborative research, partnerships, and a constant drive to innovate. “Our mission has always been to serve the industry through excellence and integrity,” said Azar. “That hasn’t changed — it’s only grown stronger.”
